Incredible images of shipbuilding on the River Clyde through the ages

There was a time in this city's not too distant history when Glasgow ruled the waves.

At one stage a fifth of the world's ships were built on the River Clyde, with thousands of men employed in the yards.

Streets in areas like Scotstoun and Govan were filled with workers every morning and at night. Within decades they were empty, as the yards closed one by one.

It is only over the past 20 years that Glasgow has started to respond to the crisis that left men with no jobs, hope or future and stripped the Clyde bare.

New developments have sprung up in recent years, with the old Govan Graving Docks to be restored so it can welcome ships again as a heritage site.

But the fight continues over how the city remembers its past and the men who built its foundations as 'The Second City of the Empire.'

Our gallery contains stunning images from our archives charting the heydays through to the decline and showing the last working yards that remain.
