Away from the turbulence in Government this week, which has seen Liz Truss abandon her plans to cut the 45p rate of income tax and blue-on-blue infighting at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, a divisive debate over the correct method of brewing tea broke out amongst our readers.

Below we showcase some of the most eagerly discussed talking points from Telegraph readers in the comments section, Letters page, ‌Community‌ ‌Facebook‌ ‌group and the Front Page newsletter.

What's the right way to make a cup of tea?

Few subjects are more divisive than the correct brewing of tea. This week, the debate reared its head again on our Letters pages, as readers put forward their chosen method to make a proper brew. Milk first? Squeeze the teabag or let it brew? One or more teabags per teapot? Differing preferences have plagued our readers – and you can read a selection below.

45p tax rate cut U-turn

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng refused to resign after the Government abandoned its plans to cut the 45p additional rate of income tax. The majority of readers argued the Conservative Party had shied away from the proposed reduction to the detriment of the economy, and blamed pressure from Party naysayers for the U-turn; while others suggested Liz Truss and the Chancellor were arrogant to flaunt a tax cut for the wealthiest during a cost of living crisis.

Tory civil war

Blue-on-blue infighting and confusion over tax and spending plans marred the Conservative Party’s conference in Birmingham this week. Readers were on high alert to a Government in turmoil and urged the Tory Party to get behind Liz Truss in support of her economic proposals.

Russia latest

Vladimir Putin’s weaknesses were made apparent this week as his threats of nuclear warfare intensified, while Ukraine freed thousands of people from Russian occupation. Richard Kemp argued as Russian fortunes go from bad to worse, Putin, like Hitler, is increasingly micromanaging events on the battlefield. Readers agreed that the situation does not look hopeful for Russia as winter approaches, although some warned Putin should not be underestimated.
