A kayaker who went missing for several hours on Hobart's River Derwent after her paddling companion raised the alarm has been found.

Two kayakers were paddling from Cornelian Bay to South Arm when they became separated on Wednesday afternoon.

The missing kayaker's companion phoned emergency services around 12:50pm for help and a search was launched between the Tasman Bridge and the Tranmere area.

A police boat and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were part of the search.

Shortly after 3:00pm, police announced the kayaker had been found in the river near Ralphs Bay.

She was picked up by the rescue helicopter and flown to Royal Hobart Hospital for medical assessment.

The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a strong wind warning for the Derwent Estuary on Wednesday.
