Trees planted in a park, intended as a memorial to those who have died of Covid, have been destroyed by vandals.
Labour Councillor for Old Swan, William Shortall, discovered the senseless vandalism in Doric Park yesterday.
The councillor, who has been in the job for 16-months, said the destruction was "heartbreaking" and even more so as there were plans for the trees to be dedicated as a memorial to those who had lost their lives to Covid.

Cllr Shortall said: "The green environment is really important and it was heartbreaking to see them pulled up.
"And what makes me angry is we've got some good projects for young people in the area. I don't want to stereotype anyone but I don't believe it's older people doing it."
The vandalism, which Cllr Shortall said has been reported to the community policing team, has made many other park users "ashamed" of those who destroyed the trees which were only planted in March.
Cllr Shortall added: "We were going to dedicate those trees to those that lost their lives during Covid, like they've done at Newsham Park where the trees are done out in the shape of a giant heart.

"We're sowing the seeds of the future so other people will get the benefit and this is what breaks my heart - it's for future generations."

The Labour councillor told the ECHO the uprooted trees would be replaced, hopefully with older trees surrounded by cages to prevent any further acts of vandalism.
Doric Park in Old Swan received a Green Flag award in 2010 which awards parks that promote standards of good management and best-practice in the green space sector.
