Gogglebox’s Stephen opens up about difficulties 'coming out' to his mum as cast left speechless at Channel 4’s It’s A Sin

Gogglebox’s Stephen has opened up about the difficulties he had coming out to his mum as gay in the ‘90s.

In the first episode of the new series of Gogglebox, the stars cast their eyes on the finale of Channel 4’s It’s A Sin.

Goggleboxers watched the moment Ritchie - played by Years and Years’ Olly Alexander - came out to his mum in hospital whilst being treated for AIDS.

The programme left them all speechless, with Julie Malone having to reach for the tissues after getting emotional.

But it was a topic that touched a nerve for Stephen - who appears on the show with husband Dan Lustig-Webb - as he mentioned he also had trouble coming out to his mum.

Speaking after Ritchie told his parents he was gay, Stephen said: “It weren’t that different in the 90s when I came out to my mum.”

He continued, “But I wouldn’t care if it were my child.”

It comes as Gogglebox stars Ellie and Izzie admitted they had binged the whole of It's a Sin, with Ellie saying she "didn't want the last episode" to come.

The Channel 4 programme, written and created by Russell T Davies, depicts the lives of a group of gay men and their friends who lived during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s in the UK.

It was one of several programme's the Goggleboxers watched tonight, with others including Netflix documentary Surviving Death and This Morning.
