Detroit (AFP) - Striking workers at General Motors will not return to work until the full union membership votes on a new contract, a spokesman for the United Auto Workers said Thursday.

The deal was hammered out after months of bargaining but won’t bring an immediate end to the strike by 49,000 hourly workers.

DETROIT — Bargainers for General Motors and the United Auto Workers reached a tentative contract deal on Wednesday that could end a month-long strike that brought the company's U.S. factories, as well as some Canadian operations, to a standstill.

General Motors Co. is proceeding with plans to part ways with the massive Ohio car factory it’s operated for more than half a century, all but cementing the facility’s status as a political liability for President Donald Trump.

Whatever its immediate results may be, UAW’s current strike has deep ramifications for the future of automobiles.

The deal ends the longest nationwide strike at GM in a half-century.
