So, as rumoured, Franz Ferdinand played the Park Stage tonight, squeezing themselves snugly inbetween John Cale and Dizzee Rascal on a lively Friday night bill. And successful set it was too...
Franz ploughed furiously through the hits including an uproarious Take Me Out and a spiky, speedy Michael. They also roadtested some of the material from their new, third album and revealed some funk amd disco flourishes that seem to suggest a return to their manifesto of writing songs to make girl's dance. Certainly the crowd didn't need much encouragement to do so tonight. And of course, there's a full review to come later on Guardian/Music.
As secret gigs go, it was pretty well publicised, even if Alex Kapranos insisted he was out flyering for it earlier in the evening. But it was a happy addition to the original lineup and lent a touch of the unexpected that Glastonbury has been lacking in recent years. Tomorrow night's tip for a surprise slot is Last Shadow Puppets and Kasabian.
An interesting shift followed the set too. As the older art rocking crowd began to shuffle away, they were met in equal numbers by hordes of kids, all descending en masse for Dizzee.
