Glasgow flats residents in balcony 'smoking ban' over Grenfell cladding fears

Residents of a block of flats have been warned not to smoke or use candles on their balconies because they have the same cladding as Grenfell Tower.

It has emerged that external walls at Lancefield Quay, in Glasgow’s Anderston, are clad in Aluminium Composite Material (ACM).

Similar problems at another development cost about £30,000 per home owner to fix.

The cladding is believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire at London’s Grenfell Tower in June 2017 which resulted in 72 deaths.

Last December, a flat in a nearby development went on fire, causing widespread damage to it and other properties.

In February, there was a fire in the parking garage at Lancefield Quay itself.

Now, a report commissioned by the Lancefield Quay factors, James Gibb, has identified 22 separate points classed as an “intolerable risk” to people living in the flats over evacuation strategy and non-compliance with recommended building materials in construction.

James Gibb commissioned Michael A Fox Associates – specialists in fire risk assessments – to carry out a survey.

Their report said work needs to be done to make external walls, balconies and pre-assembled structural panels used as separating walls safe.

Stage one includes a ban on candles, patio heaters, barbecues and storing gas tanks on balconies.

It also bans smoking, stating: “Under no circumstances should cigarette ends be thrown from the balcony as this is highly dangerous.”
