Former Manchester United player explains why Anthony Martial transfer makes sense

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes an Old Trafford exit for Anthony Martial would be beneficial for both parties.

The striker has told the club that he wishes to leave after a seven-season stay. The Frenchman has featured in 10 games in all competitions this season but has only started four of them and has struggled for game-time since Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho arrived at the club.

Martial ’s sole goal of the term so far came in October’s 1-1 draw with Everton.

In fact, his goal ratio has been decreasing since the 2019/20 campaign — when he scored 23 goals in all competitions — having netted just seven times in 36 games last season.

Bosnich, who played 35 times for United across two stints in his career, agrees that Martial is right to want to move on but predicted that it might not happen as soon as some fans may think.

Speaking to Sky Sports , the Australian said: “It really depends on whether Manchester United and Ralf Rangnick do see a role for Anthony Martial going forward or, if they are looking for a replacement, maybe they are going to try and delay it a little bit.

“I completely understand from the player’s side, he’s had long enough there and it’s time for him, in my opinion - and I think it would be good for the club as well - to move on.

“But with all these games coming thick and fast and with all these Covid pull-outs and the injuries piling up, Ralf Rangnick and Manchester United may be thinking ‘listen, we might just keep him for the time being because he may be important to us during this period’.”

Since his arrival from Monaco in September 2015, Martial has played 268 matches for United, scoring 79 goals and providing 50 assists.

He has lifted a Europa League, an FA Cup and a League Cup during his time in Manchester.
