Forecasters predict new tropical storm will strengthen in coming days

  • A new tropical storm, Mario, has developed off Mexico's Pacific coast, triggering warnings for wind, rain, and potential flash flooding.
  • Despite being labelled 'mini', the storm is currently generating maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph).
  • A tropical storm watch has been issued for sections of Michoacan state, specifically from Lazaro Cardenas to Punta San Telmo.
  • The storm is located approximately 40 miles (64 kilometres) south-southwest of Zihuatanejo and 60 miles (97 kilometres) south-southeast of Lazaro Cardenas.
  • Forecasters anticipate Mario will strengthen in the coming days, with rainfall estimates of 2 to 4 inches and a risk of flash flooding in higher terrain.
