Folarin Balogun sends message to Mikel Arteta immediately after Southampton defeat

Arsenal youngster Folarin Balogun sent a clear message to Mikel Arteta just minutes after the Gunners were knocked out of the FA Cup.

A first-half Gabriel own goal condemned Arsenal to a 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the fourth round of the competition.

And it means their only chance of silverware this season is in the Europa League, where they face a last-32 tie against Benfica next month.

Nineteen-year-old forward Balogun, who has found minutes hard to come by so far in the current campaign, was left out of the squad once again for the match against the Saints.

And after the full-time whistle sounded at St Mary's he made it clear that he feels he should have been involved.

Balogun took to social media to post a video of a wonderful solo goal he had scored for the youth team, and appears to be suggesting he could have done a better job than those picked by Arteta.

Balogun's contract expires in the summer, and there is a large amount of speculation regarding his future.

Some believe he is ready to leave the club due to his lack of action.

But speaking about the situation recently Arteta said: "If anything – regarding his contractual situation with the club – I just want to convince him that he has a future at the club, not send him the opposite message.

"Before he wasn’t training with the first team, we changed that and he’s been training with us a lot. He’s improving every single day, he’s showing a real hunger and decided to be with us.

"We’re trying to get something done because we want him to stay and we have to go step-by-step. I think he’s made some big steps in the last few months, where he wasn’t even training and then he had a few good games for us.

"So the steps are there in every way and we want to try to keep him."

Balogun has so far made just five appearances all season, all of them coming in cup competitions.

And it seems highly unlikely he will agree to stay at Arsenal unless he is given more opportunities very soon.
