FA Chief's comments about the FA Cup will please Newcastle United fans

FA CEO Mark Bullingham insists finishing this season's FA Cup remains a priority.

With English professional football suspended until at least April 4 due to the coronavirus outbreak, there had been talk of the FA Cup being sacrificed in order to finish the current Premier League season.

But after EURO 2020 was put back until 2021, the priority for the English game is to finish the current domestic season - and that includes the FA Cup.

“Everyone’s priority is to finish this season - that’s one of the main reasons for delaying the Euros, to allow a window that, if the virus gets under control, there will be a window to potentially finish the season," Bullingham said.

“At the moment, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We’re planning every eventuality, so that we can react. The most important thing at the moment is people’s health.

“At the moment we’ve got a number of contingency plans and we will continue to adapt as and when we get more information.

“Clearly there are different scenarios, if you try and finish the season before the end of June and after it.

“At this moment in time…there are so many variables, we’re building up a contingency for every different eventuality.

“Some are more complicated than others but the number one priority at the moment is the health of the nation, and football will play its part in that.

“From our point of view, the FA Cup is incredibly important.

”We are talking the priority being that, whenever football can be played again, to complete the domestic season, we are talking about both the league and the FA Cup.”

Bullingham's words will be music to the ears of Newcastle United fans after the Magpies reached the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in 14 years this season.

Steve Bruce's side were scheduled to welcome reigning champions Manchester City to St James' Park this Saturday but the last eight tie has been suspended until further notice.
