Dominic Calvert-Lewin photo shoot sends out distinct Everton message

Seeing Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s photograph on the front of a non-football magazine caused something of a stir but I think it’s great that we’ve got a guy who is comfortable in his own skin to express himself that way.

It shows that Dominic has his own identity and he’s happy at the football club.

It raises his profile but it also raises the club’s profile and awareness of the Everton brand.

We’re disappointed that Dominic is unable to be out there on the pitch at the moment but I saw him at the charity event at the weekend and he’s hoping he could be back in contention in a couple of weeks’ time if everything goes well.

We’ve missed him massively and just want to see him back out there, banging the goals into the back of the net.

He had a great season last time out and he’ll be determined to show everyone he’s not a one-season wonder.

He always speaks well, handles himself correctly and has an old head on his shoulders.

I’d love to have been in the Everton changing room the following day though, giving him a bit of stick.

I’m sure Dom would have loved all of that and probably embraced every moment. That kind of banter just builds up morale.

However, I think there was a photograph of myself and Steven Gerrard wearing a couple of questionable tracksuits so I can’t be one for talking about fashion.

Back in our day there were always a few dodgy suits flying around and they’d be the talk of the training ground.

There was always quite a few who were trying.

Walter Smith would always want us to wear a suit when turning up for training so there a few dodgy jackets.

But as soon as we signed Abel Xavier, there was no one else in his league.

With his haircut and the gear, he was way out there.

He’d come in wearing sparkly jackets and mad coloured pants and shoes.

That was his style and we all loved him. There was nobody who was going to touch him in that respect.

We always had a good craic in the changing room about it all and some players were very protective about their gear because things would go on like tying the shoelaces together or hiding people’s clothes.

Paul Gascoigne was obviously the joker in the pack and if his suit was dirty or smelly, he’d just put someone else’s clothes on and go home.

It was always great fun when we’d come in and spot someone with a new Christmas jumper on and it would just break the ice.
