Demolition work begins on historic Glasgow city centre building

Demolition work has started on a historic building in Glasgow city centre.

The 19th century B-listed building, on the corner of Argyle Street and York Street, will be torn down to make way for a new £95million 13-floor office development.

As such, road closures in the area are in place this weekend, as detailed by Glasgow City Council's Traffic Control and Management team (TRAFFCOM):

"As a safety measure, in order to demolish the old tenement building at the Southeast corner of Argyle Street/York Street, it will be necessary to close Argyle Street between York Street and Robertson Street and in addition close York Street from Broomielaw to Argyle Street.

"Restrictions will be from 20:00hrs on Friday 22 November 2019 until 06:00hrs on Monday 25 November 2019.

"Delays should be expected."

Glasgow City Council’s planning department gave the green light to plans for the 13 storey office block in August despite 18 objections from residents.

The site which has been empty for more than 20-years will see B-listed, C-listed and unlisted buildings, which have been deemed beyond repair by Historic Environment Scotland, knocked down.

At least 3000 new jobs are expected to be created as a result of the development which aims to support the Argyle Street Avenues project.

Conor Osborne, CEO, Osborne+Co, the applicant behind the development, said: “Glasgow is a key regional business hub recognised most notably for financial services, life sciences and renewable energy.

“We are confident that this ambitious development will help Glasgow to fulfil its full potential by attracting global occupiers looking to invest and expand their UK presence and benefit from the skilled local workforce Glasgow has to offer.”
