Dame Emily Park: Resident 'trapped' by event attended by hundreds - police called

Police were called to an unlicensed music event attended by hundreds of people in Bristol yesterday (August 1).

The event took place at Dame Emily Park in Bedminster and a local resident said music was played at a "deafening" volume and they felt "trapped and intimidated".

They told Bristol Live: "I am one of the local residents disturbed by the constant music (including swearing and screaming) and hundreds of people gathered without social distancing or masks."

They said live bands were playing music throughout the afternoon and people were gathered to watch skaters in the skate park, and weren't social distancing.

Although the live music finished at around 6.30pm, they said, crowds of people stayed in the park until gone 11pm, creating noise in the residential area.

They continued: "Residents were completely unaware this event would take place. It should definitely not have been held during a pandemic.

"I called the police twice on the non-emergency number to report the unbearable noise and frequent bad language and the lack of social distancing.

"In a pandemic, with limited places to go, I had no option but to remain at home with the windows shut (difficult in a heatwave). I felt trapped and intimidated."

Other residents also took to social media to discuss the event, with mixed feedback.

One said: "Hundreds in Dame Emily Park. Jumping through the bonfire."

One stated: "I can hear live punk/rock music playing in the distance in the direction of the stadium. Anyone know what's going on?"

Another replied: "A rave in Dame Emily Park."

And another said: "Went last year it was brilliant!!!"

Avon and Somerset Constabulary confirmed the force did attend.

A spokesperson said: "We received several reports from 2pm onwards about an unlicensed music event taking place in Dame Emily Park in Bedminster, Bristol, which was attended by several hundred people.

"Officers attended and engaged with the organisers who agreed to stop the music at 6pm.

"Emergency services subsequently received further calls about anti-social behaviour in the park at 9.30pm, with hundreds of people reported standing around a bonfire.

"Police returned to the park along with the fire service leading to those gathering leaving soon afterwards."
