David Bowie planned to relaunch his alter ego Ziggy Stardust in outer space

This is Major Tom to Ground Control... David Bowie had been plotting to relaunch his alter ego Ziggy Stardust in outer space.

The Starman, who died in 2016, was always out of this world.

And I can reveal he once talked about buying up old satellites orbiting the Earth as part of a barmy scheme during the Noughties.

The Space Oddity was discussed between The Thin White Duke and computer games designer Phil Campbell, who he first worked with on a video game.

David Bowie was quite the chameleon in life before his sad passing four years ago (Redferns)

Phil says: “We talked about buying up a bunch of old satellites that were circling the Earth and he was going to relaunch Ziggy from space.

“The idea was that Ziggy would beam us transmissions – ‘Are you receiving me...?’”

Bowie also hatched a plan to go through Changes – by appearing in a fantasy computer game called Omikron: The Nomad Soul.

The singer had been hired to provide the music for it in 1998 then asked if he could feature in the game itself.

And while he wanted to go in as David Bowie, he wanted to return to the name he was born with at the end of it.

Phil adds: “One day David said, could he leave his Bowie persona in Omikron, and come out as David Jones? It was a delicious thought – did he crave the anonymity of that?

"And it fitted the spirit of the game: Omikron was a giant trap, you could lose your soul in there for ever.”
