Craig Levein: Hearts will get better as forward players get sharper

Craig Levein insists there’s more to come from Hearts’ forward players as their sharpness improves over the next few weeks.

Uche Ikpeazu, Conor Washington, Jamie Walker and Steven Naismith in particular played a big part in Hearts coming from behind against Aberdeen on Saturday.

The visitors looked set for all three points until a late sending off for Aaron Hickey and Clevid Dikamona conceding a penalty allowed Derek McInnes’ team equalise before going on to grab a winner.

In introduction of Naismith and Washington especially saw a big improvement in Hearts’ display.

Naismith headed his side level with his first touch before Washington went close. Ikpeazu then set up Jamie Walker to poke Hearts in to a lead they looked good for until inexperience and poor decision making ultimately cost them the game.

‘Absolutely things will get better for this team,” he told Hears TV. “We’ve not had Naisy in the team. Jamie Walker’s not done a proper pre-season, Uche’s not done a proper pre-season, Washington’s not done a proper pre-season, so we’ll get better. I’m absolutely convinced about that.

“I was pleased with Sean Clare’s performance in a deeper midfield role and I thought he handled that particularly well.

“I thought young Andy Irving was good and we should be talking about all those positive things but there’s a bitter taste in my mouth after throwing those points away.”
