Cork City Council's downbeat message as severe flooding hits after lockdown announcement

Cork has been hit by high tides and substantial flooding after heavy rainfall overnight.

The Rebel County was issued with a weather warning on Monday with torrential downpours and high winds blasting the south-coast.

And this morning Cork City and many parts of the county have woken up to extensive flooding.

Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett Street in the City are both covered in water almost at knee height in parts, with many buildings damaged.

Cork City Council has been updating locals on Twitter and are downbeat with the flooding adding to Monday night's lockdown announcement.

They tweeted: "The morning after #Lockdown2 is announced, this is what happened on Oliver Plunkett St in @corkcitycentre - a street with real personality due to its many independent traders."

The city council has closed off Sharmon Crawford Street as it's impassible.

The list below are also spots that are getting it bad:

  1. Morrison’s Quay
  2. Fr Matthew Quay
