Charlize Theron says we've been pronouncing her name wrong this entire time

Since the early 90s, Charlize Theron has been blessing our screens with her acting talents.

We've seen her in everything from Mighty Joe Young to Mad Max: Fury Road and of course who could forget those iconic Dior J'adore adverts.

But it turns out that the entire time we've been following her career, we've been making a big mistake.

The 44-year-old has just revealed that we've all been pronouncing her name wrong for years - and honestly, it's blown our minds a little.

Appearing on The One Show, Charlize spoke to Alex Jones and Gethin Jones about the correct way to say her name.

The South African starlet was welcomed onto the show via a video link.

Alex then said: "We’ve had a thing about your name today. Am I saying it right?"

Theron replied; "Yes, fantastic."

But it turns out, it wasn't quite right after all.

Gethin interjected: "I was worried about this today Charlize. We were talking about it and everyone calls you Charlize The-RON and I was going no, I’m pretty sure it’s Charlize TEH-Ron.

"But you’re quite calm about people saying it in a different way."

Charlize then agreed, admitting that she doesn't usually correct people as they're so far off the mark.

She said: "Honestly, the truth of the matter is [that neither version is] even remotely close to the real pronunciation."

Intrigued, Alex asks if they can hear the proper version.

The actress kindly indulged the pair, explaining that her name is actually pronounced more like the word 'throne', with a roll of the 'r'.

She added that it's a French name and people in South Africa would say it differently depending whether they were Afrikaan speaking or English speaking - so she's used to people saying it in various ways.

People on Twitter found the interaction a little awkward to watch.

One person posted: "Poor Charlize Theron being asked how to pronounce her name on The One Show. It's Saoirse Ronan all over again."

Another commented: "Nothing like saying hello to someone by debating how to say their name for five minutes in front of them."
