Carine Roitfeld is the founder of CR Fashion book, former editor of French Vogue, has collaborated with Tom Ford and is the latest addition to the mytheresa.com Women gang that includes Brooke Shields and Alexa Chung. As such, she knows a thing or two about insouciant, sexy French style: it’s all pencil skirts, heels and a whole lot of eyeliner. Here, she talks about her wardrobe staples, how diamonds make her feel and what she would never wear.
When I like something I repeat buy it. I know I am going to wear the pieces a lot. So, high heels – I have a lot of black stilettos, different heel heights – skirts, some tight sweaters and tights, because I love tights. It’s almost like a uniform. My favourite colour is definitely black and I love to mix it with khaki.
Maybe it is my French taste but I start the day with the lingerie. It’s the first piece of fashion I am going to wear so it is going to drive the choice of my clothes. Believe it or not, it is the truth.
I don’t have a special look for different moments. It’s always a bit the same – I would wear the same thing to a show, or to travel. Some people think I am too sophisticated to take a plane but it’s my way. I don’t change.
I think diamonds make you look like Marilyn Monroe, very beautiful. It makes you very light, no? I like to put a lot on my ears. I like to mix them. A lot of diamonds these days. This is my new trend of the season.
I would never buy sneakers. I really dislike them! I dare you to find a picture of me wearing sneakers. I bet you will never find one. I don’t wear them. I think it is unattractive. I know that Kanye West sells so many sneakers and I know that Tom [Ford] makes beautiful sneakers, but I never wear them.
