Candy Palmater dead: Comedian tragically dies 'suddenly' on Christmas Day aged 53

Comedian Candy Palmater died "suddenly" on Christmas Day, her wife has confirmed.

The Trailer Park Boys Star's wife Denise Tompkins announced the sad news on Instagram, saying that she has "few words".

She went on to pay tribute to her wife as a "great glowing spirit".

It comes just after Palmater was hospitalised for a few weeks, revealing on December 2 in an Instagram post that she had been admitted to hospital and had a nasal cannula fitted.

Tompkins wrote on her social media page: "I have few words. Candy passed away today at home suddenly.

"A great glowing spirit left our world today."

The Social CTV also paid tribute to the late star and wrote in a statement: "Today our entire team is grieving the sudden passing of our good friend Candy Palmater, who always left us smiling a bit bigger, laughing a bit harder, and thinking a bit more critically about the world around us. We're thinking of her loved ones today. She'll be deeply missed."

Her cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Palmater shared with fans earlier this month that she had been diagnosed with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), an extremely rare autoimmune condition.

The condition, previously known as Churg-Strauss syndrome, is a form of vasculitis, which is a family of rare diseases characterised by inflammation of the blood vessels, according to the Vasculitis Foundation.

The organisation explains that EGPA "can restrict blood flow and damage vital organs and tissues" and that "EGPA is one of the rarest forms of vasculitis and primarily affects the small blood vessels".

Among the organs that it can affect include the heart, skin, sinuses, lungs and kidneys.

She previously wrote on Instagram: "14 nights in the hospital but if it wasn't for the compassion, abilities and the humanity of the people of Saint Michaels I don't know how I would manage."
