Bus driver praised for touching act of kindness helping elderly man

A bus driver has been praised for helping an elderly passenger to cross a busy road safely. Eleanor Weller was driving the 151 service to Blackwood when she parked at Rogerstone Vicarage bus stop and gave the gentleman a helping hand.

Passenger Ian Nicholson was on his way home to Penytwyn-Mawr when he witnessed the act of kindness and posted it on social media to share some positivity. The 50-year-old said: "I don't usually travel on a bus, it was just a one off as I had come out of the hospital following an operation and had no way of getting home.

"Bus drivers often get a bad reputation for getting grumpy, but even when I got on the bus she was very friendly. It was nice to experience that after being down from surgery. The elderly man was on the bus already and used the signal to get off.

"The road was very wide and the traffic was quite dangerous and he was a bit unstable getting off the bus. Without hesitation, she got up and asked the passengers if we minded if she helped him. We said no and she got out and helped him cross the road. The traffic was flowing and one car stopped to let them pass on one side. Then she carried on as normal. Further down there was a lady with a walking frame who she helped off too."

Ian's post has so far has had nearly 700 shares and more than 80 comments. He said he shared it to spread some positivity. He said: "It was quite nice to watch, if that was one of my parents it would be nice to know someone was looking out for them.

"To her it was just part of the job, but to everyone watching you could see how much it meant to people, like the elderly gentleman who was able to get home without any harm. She cared about the safety of her passengers. Many of the comments on the post were from people who seemed to know the lady, so from what I can gather she is a very kind person generally. I posted it online to share some positivity, it was just something nice and people deserve to be praised for being kind."

Eleanor came across the post herself and commented: "I just want to say thank you for all these lovely comments and kind words, but for me, helping the gentleman across the road didn't even need thinking about. I was raised to respect my elders.. and even at my age I still do! Kindness costs nothing... but can make someone's day."

She told WalesOnline: "I was just doing my job as far as I was concerned, I didn't do it for any attention - I did it just because it was the right thing to do and I would do it again if I needed to. I was overwhelmed to see the response, but it was nice to see."
