The mayor of Bristol has backed plans to ban lap-dancing clubs in the city.
But Marvin Rees insists the decision lies with councillors and that he cannot take control of it.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (March 3), Mr Rees echoed comments he made five years ago as a mayoral candidate before the last election when he pledged his support to the campaign to prohibit sexual entertainment venues (SEVs).
The proposed ban will be considered by Bristol City Council licensing committee on Monday (March 8).
Members are being asked to approve a new draft policy that would introduce a “nil cap” of strip clubs.
Asked on Wednesday (March 3) whether he was in favour of the plan, he said: “Yes, I said in 2016 after having a number of women’s organisations talk to me at the time and lobby me that I was supportive of that position.
“But it is important to say this is a licensing decision.
“It is not something I’m in control of or have been able to control over the last five years.
“It will be up to the way they vote that will determine the future of our licensing and SEVs.”
The city centre currently has two erotic pole-dancing venues – Central Chambers and Urban Tiger – the maximum allowed.
The local authority’s existing policy on sexual establishments permits one additional SEV in Old Market/West Street, although there are none in the area at present.
Both locations would see the limit reduced to zero under the draft policy.
If approved, it would go out to public consultation for 12 weeks.
