Bristol City continue recall loan talks as James Morton and Owura Edwards return

Bristol City are aiming to reinforce their squad with several young players returning from loans elsewhere over the next days.

Head coach Dean Holden confirmed that plans were in place to recall four to five players, as he spoke ahead of City's trip to the capital to face Brentford on Saturday.

Central midfielder James Morton - who made his debut for the Robins in the Carabao Cup earlier this season - and winger Owura Edwards have returned from loan at Grimsby Town.

Morton, 21, made four starts in League Two for the Mariners and will offer Dean Holden another option in central midfield. He has been back at the club for 10 days already and training with the first team.

Edwards, 19, is the brother of Opi and has impressed in 11 league starts up at Blundell Park, where both tyros played under Ian Holloway before the former Bristol Rovers manager announced his resignation from his post last month. Both may travel to Brentford and the pair could also be in Dean Holden's 20-man squad due to injuries, with only eight substitutes named for the match against Luton.

And the duo are joined by striker Saikou Janneh, who has returned from loan from Newport County as the 20-year-old recovers from a hamstring injury.

Talks are continuing over bringing back Kasey Palmer from Swansea City, where the midfielder is happy but who will want to ascertain whether he will get more playing chances in South Wales or South Bristol for the rest of the season.

Injuries to Liam Walsh, Jamie Paterson, Andi Weimann, Callum O'Dowda and Joe Williams may swing that conversation, with Dean Holden remaining in touch with the midfield playmaker, but the Swans do not wish to lose the player either.

In addition, the club may recall Cameron Pring or Hakeeb Adelakun from loan too - though as of yesterday neither Kenny Jackett or Grant McCann had heard from the Robins.

That may change over the next days as City look for cover at full-back with Dasilva injured for several months due to a shin problem and possibly another attacking midfield option - dependent on what happens with Palmer.

Marley Watkins has returned to Ashton Gate already and is aiming to return to playing from February as he recovers from a hamstring injury too, with tissue injuries mounting up across the game.

Dean Holden has already hinted that January will be a quiet transfer window otherwise.
