BRIEF: Jennifer Hudson says her son wants to be a singer too

Jan. 05--Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson said her 6-year-old son's singing skills are improving as he continues to practice Michael Jackson songs and tunes from her Broadway show "The Color Purple."

"He's now starting to evolve outside of the Michael," Hudson, a South Side singer-turned-actress, told Seth Meyers Monday on "Late Night." "He's been singing 'The Color Purple' songs too. So that's his thing. He runs around the house. He likes singing the songs from ('The Color Purple') movie."

Hudson, 34, said her son, David Otunga Jr., enjoys watching her Broadway musical because he has a crush on 28-year-old British actress Cynthia Erivo, who plays Celie.

"Because 'Color Purple,' I wouldn't imagine, is like every 6-year-old's favorite thing," Meyers joked.

"I think it's because he's in love with Celie, the girl who plays Celie. He wants her to be his girlfriend ... That's not going to happen," Hudson said.

"The Color Purple," which officially opened last month, is scheduled to run through April at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
