Bricks smash Indian restaurant's windows two days running as owner fears for his safety

Update: A man from Neath has been charged with criminal damage and possession of controlled Class B drugs in connection with these incidents.

A restaurant owner fears for his safety after bricks were thrown at his business' windows twice in 24 hours.

Miah Shahin runs Paprika, one of several Indian restaurants in Windsor Road in Neath. One of Paprika's windows was smashed with a brick at 7.10am on Monday and another at 2.45am on Tuesday.

Asked if they are treating the vandalism as racially-aggravated South Wales Police said they are working to "ascertain the full circumstances". Mr Shahin, who lives above the restaurant, said the attacks have left him with "a big worry" for his safety, adding: "I would never have believed this would happen."

A mental health nurse witnessed the criminal damage on Monday. The 31-year-old, who did not want to be named, said: "I was driving through Neath at around 7am with both my children in the car — my eight-year-old son and three-year-old daughter. I was on the way to dropping the children off to childcare as I was due to start my shift at 7.30am.

"While driving down Windsor Road I noticed a man come running out of one of the side streets and begin to run in the middle of the road. He then stopped outside the Indian takeaway Paprika. This was when I noticed he had a brick in his hand.

"He threw the brick into the window causing it to smash and then ran off. This was not something we were expecting to see on a Monday morning and my children were quite shaken up and scared by what they witnessed. Thankfully we were in the car so they felt more protected. After reporting to the police my children felt a little more reassured when they said they were sending a police car to respond to the incident."

Mr Shahin had heard some shouting outside on Monday morning but he was not aware the brick had gone through his window until police arrived at 9am and told him about the vandalism. He boarded up the window but the next one along was targeted on Tuesday morning.

Following the damage in the early hours the business owner said he did not sleep because of his stress over the attack. He said he would urge anyone with information to contact police.

South Wales Police were called at about 2.45am after the second incident. Inspector Lindsey Sweeney said: “Inquiries are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances behind this incident and the incident reported to us on Monday, March 14. Investigations are ongoing including perusing CCTV in the local area. Increased patrols are also being carried out."

On Wednesday a force spokesman added: "A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and is currently in police custody."

Anyone with information about either attack is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting occurrence number 2200084261 or 2200085436. You can contact the force by phoning 101, emailing SWP101@south-wales.police.uk, or visiting this website.
