Beeston to get new public toilet block

A new public toilet block would add to Beeston’s ‘vitality and viability’, a council says.

An application for the single-storey block has been put forward by Broxtowe Borough Council for land off Styring Street in Beeston.

The plans were discussed during a Broxtowe Borough Council Planning Committee meeting on July 28.

The planning application stated: “The application proposes the construction of a toilet block incorporating a changing places toilet, an accessible toilet and two further toilet cubicles. A green wall is proposed behind the toilets, to be affixed to the existing brick wall.

“The proposed development will provide a facility for the public in the town centre.”

The block would include an accessible toilet and two unisex toilets.

The plans were previously for a male and a female toilet, but this was changed after comments were received about ensuring inclusivity.

The toilets would be maintained by the council and cleaned regularly.

Previously, the site was used by commercial units which were demolished to make way for the tram route and interchange.

The block would be in close proximity to St John the Baptist Church and the West End Beeston Conservation Area, but the application stated that “it is considered the building will cause no harm to the setting of nearby heritage assets”.

It added: “Such a facility will ensure Beeston town centre is accessible for all users and as a result, be of benefit to the vitality and viability of the town.”
