Ballon d'Or voting in full: The points each player scored as Lionel Messi claims award

Lionel Messi claimed his sixth Ballon d'Or award at a showstopping event in Paris on Monday night.

Barcelona wizard Messi poked a gong ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo - as he completed a stunning 2019 with the famous trophy, to go alongside the ones he collected in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Messi pipped Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk to the prize - with the Argentine picking up 686 voting points to the centre back's 679.

Van Dijk picked up the most votes from the European and Asian continents, with Messi topping the charts in each of the other four confederation areas.

Reds winger Sadio Mane was Africa's second favourite player, with Merseyside teammate Alisson breaching the top five in North America.

Ronaldo came third in the vote - which is awarded by France Football and sees a top journalist in each country voting for their top five players of the calendar year.

England's voter, the Times' Henry Winter, picked van Dijk has his No.1, with Messi, Ronaldo, Raheem Sterling and Alisson his other selections.

Three players on the 30-man shortlist, Donny van de Beek, Joao Felix and Marquinhos, all failed to garner a single vote.
