Armed robber threatened bookies staff with 'homemade weapon' before making off with cash

An armed robber with a 'homemade weapon' stole cash from the till of during a betting shop raid.

Just before 8pm on Tuesday, a man entered the Betfred bookmaker on Ellison Street in Jarrow.

The man was described as wearing a khaki top and dark trousers and was carrying what is believed to be a homemade weapon, according to Northumbria Police.

He threatened the shopkeeper and demanded she empty the contents of the till.

He is then believed to have taken the cash before making off.

Police were called to the scene and have launched an investigation to find the man.

The shopkeeper was unharmed and no one was else was believed to be injured.
