The reason why Antoine Griezmann was never going to join Arsenal as Atletico close on transfer

Antoine Griezmann looks set to make the move back to Atletico Madrid ahead of the transfer window closing this evening.

And, with Arsenal lacking in goals this season - they have yet to score in three Premier League games - it may lead to some Gunners fans asking why their club has not made a move to sign the Barcelona frontman.

Barcelona have had something of a financial crisis, and were unable to offer Lionel Messi the contract he desired, leading to the diminutive frontman leaving for Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the window.

And Griezmann is now set to exit too, heading back to La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

But the Frenchman could have been a perfect signing for Mikel Arteta's men, particularly given the Gunners were interested in signing him before he even signed for Atletico the first time.

Arsenal tried to sign Griezmann back in 2013 when he was on the books of Real Sociedad and their attempt ended in the Frenchman criticising the club.

The deal collapsed late on, with the Gunners pulling the plug when it was their initial hope of getting it done.

Releasing his autobiography back in 2017, Griezmann opened up on the scenario and revealed why the club stalled on signing him.

"I waited, I waited, and I kept waiting,” Griezmann said in his autobiography.

"When there was no news, Eric [Olhats] (Griezmann's former agent) called Gilles Grimandi, who said that the manager [Arsene Wenger] was still interested in me [and] to keep waiting.

"Finally a few hours before the market closed, he let us know Arsenal would not make a move. I don't like to be told something and for it not to happen.

"So when Eric told me later that the London club were interested again I told him 'Forget it, after the blow they gave us'."
