Amazon said on Wednesday it planned to appeal a French court ruling limiting deliveries to essential goods, in order to allow for a more rigorous assessment of coronavirus risks at its sites in the country.
The court in Nanterre, outside Paris, ruled on Tuesday that Amazon must limit its operations to delivering only essential goods while it evaluates workers’ risks of coronavirus exposure.
"We're puzzled by the court ruling given the hard evidence brought forward regarding security measures put in place to protect our employees", the US online retailing giant said in a statement.
"We're assessing the consequences of this decision and our options and we think we will appeal", the company added.
The court in Nanterre said Amazon France had “failed to recognise its obligations regarding the security and health of its workers”.
While carrying out the health evaluation, Amazon can prepare and deliver only “food, hygiene and medical products,” the court said.
