Aldi’s new 'vegan bacon' sparks outrage as shoppers demand they change the name

Supermarket giant Aldi has launched 'vegan bacon' and shoppers are furious - demanding that they change the name of the product.

People really aren't happy that Aldi has named their new vegan product, which costs £2.19 for 10 strips, 'bacon', saying they didn't understand why it was named after meat.

After sharing news of the item's launch on Facebook, angry customers were soon commenting in their thousands, as the Manchester Evening News reports.

Many people commented on the post, with one man saying he found it 'infuriating', asking why Aldi stuck with the trend of making plant-based products that resemble their meat counterparts.

What do you think about Aldi's vegan bacon? Let us know in the comments...

Aldi shared the vegan bacon product on Facebook, writing: "Who said vegan needed to be boring (and expensive)? Not us. In store now!"

The post included a picture of the item, and it really does look like bacon - although a slightly two-dimensional version.

One furious shopper wrote: "Call it something else. Bacon is a cut of MEAT. Simples."

"Impossible... bacon is meat... rename it," demanded a second.

A third critic blasted: "Getting p****ed off with this now. You don't want to eat meat so why the hell would you want to eat a product that resembles it?"

"Bacon is bacon which is meat. This isn’t so don’t call it bacon!" exclaimed somebody else.

Another called the name 'infuriating'.

However, not everyone was quite so offended by the product.

"I envy the people whose biggest worry in life is what Aldi is calling their fake bacon," said one Aldi fan.

Another agreed: "For those complaining about it being called bacon because you want it described accurately. Maybe the meat version should be called 'sliced pig back or side'. You know, for the sake of accuracy and all that."

"I'm not a vegan or veggie at all, really love meat and dairy products, but I don't get why people get so annoyed by stuff like this. I think it's great having a wide range of food options for vegans and veggies. Sometimes I try them myself as well for a change," agreed a third.

Aldi has been contacted for comment.
