Aldi opens new £64m East Midlands distribution centre creating 400 jobs

Supermarket giant Aldi has opened its brand new £64 million East Midlands distribution centre, which will create hundreds of jobs.

The firm has opened the centre, which spans more than 600,000 sq ft, at Sawley, close to where the borders of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire meet.

According to the firm, the new distribution centre, its 11th in the UK, will serve its growing customer base in the East Midlands - and will create 400 new jobs.

The facility is part of Aldi’s planned £1 billion investment in new stores, store upgrades and improving distribution capabilities.

The firm has recently extended its store opening target to 1,200 outlets across the UK by the end of 2025.

The supermarket, which now operates more than 870 stores across the UK, attracted a million new customers last year.

Last year, Aldi announced its plans to open three new stores in the East Midlands, creating over 120 new jobs. This included the new Edwalton and Bulwell stores, which are set to open later on this year, along with the Stapleford store, which opened in 2019.

Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our new Sawley distribution centre significantly increases our capacity and allows us to open even more stores across the East Midlands to cater for the growing number of shoppers switching to Aldi.

“Although some of our newest and most popular stores are situated in the East Midlands, there are still many towns and cities where we have a limited presence or none at all.

“This is something that we are looking to address in the coming years.”

Aldi is currently Britain’s fifth largest supermarket and has 33,000 employees. It has more than doubled its market share since 2010.
