A Welsh university expands with major office deal

Cardiff Metropolitan University has expanded after acquiring an office building.

The university has added to its property estate by acquiring Alexander House, which was occupied by Bellway Homes, close to its Llandaff campus.

Alexander House, which extends to nearly 15,000 sq ft, is located near to the Tesco supermarket off Western Avenue.

The university has bought the building for £1.55m.

Where Welsh universities rank on the ultimate league table

The building will be used to house the university's commercial subsidiary in its International Centre for Design and Research, also known as PDR.

Cardiff Met said the acquisition is part of the second phase of its wider estates strategy, which it said is "designed to support the effective restructure of professional services."

The move by PDR will see the university's School of Technologies taking the vacated space at the Llandaff campus.

Plans for a National Technology Institute for 3,000 students and two year degrees revealed

The university has yet to decide on whether to develop the school at its current site, or invest tens of millions of pounds in a new dedicated campus with student accommodation at the Central Quay development at the former Brains Brewery site in the centre of Cardiff.

The latest on plans to redevelop the iconic Brains Brewery site

The challenge will be attracting high numbers of new student to UK leading courses as it looks to expand validated courses in areas from cyber-security to big data.

If it opts for Central Quay it could require a learning campus of around 100,000 sq ft, alongside student accommodation consisting of around 650 apartments.
