A captain's performance and the message it sends to struggling Nottingham Forest striker

Nottingham Forest came from behind to win 3-1 at Barnsley with a strong second-half performance to give new head coach Steve Cooper his first victory.

The hosts led through Cauley Woodrow’s first-half penalty before goals from Philip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Lewis Grabban sealed it for Forest.

We discussed the game on today's Garibaldi Red podcast with Matt Davies and Forza Garibaldi's Greg Mitchell.

Here is part of the conversation. You can listen to the full episode here or watch it here.

What was your verdict on the game?

GM: "When we were 3-1 up you saw players like Brennan Johnson trying to get more. I love watching him play. He looks like he is smiling when he has the ball.

"That second half was the best performance we've had since Sabri and before him really. It should have been more (goals).

"When we decided to turn it up a notch it was brilliant. Now it's time to push on."

What did you make of the team starting without a recognised striker?

GM: "It was the right team. They all worked together and played brilliantly.

"Lolley didn't have his touch to start with but he proved us wrong. Johnson was brilliant. Worryingly good in fact because we haven't signed him to that contract yet."

It didn't go totally to plan. What did we make of the penalty?

GM: "I don't think we should bash Figueiredo too much. It was a silly error. If he cuts these silly mistakes out there's a good player there..

"He's saved us a few times. It was annoying because it could have cost us the game, and players in that position who aren't in the team will think it's a place they can take."

How much credit do we give Steve Cooper for the win?

GM: "They all seem to be working together. The manager seems to be thoroughly enjoying it.

"I love that they keep pushing and he keeps saying it's everyone together, including the fans. I feel with him - and I don't want to get carried away - he just seems to get it."

His substitutions made a real difference, didn't they?

GM: "That wouldn't have happened under the previous manager. No way.

"It was a gamble but the first thing Grabban does is set a goal up and the second is score. You've got to give Cooper full credit for that.

"You've got to give Grabban credit too. It was a bad knock he took against Millwall but he's come back fighting. I've said in almost every episode that I don't think a striker should be a captain.

"Last night was a captain's performance from him though."

Where does it leave Lyle Taylor if they start without a striker and then bring on one who isn't fully fit?

GM: "It has to send a message to Taylor. He's got to step up to the plate. Every other player has to.

"He's got to show he wants to be here, but if he doesn't then he needs to play well to find a team in January. You do want to see big improvements from him."
