You can now explore the Lake District's most beautiful places for just £2

You can gently trundle through the most scenic parts of the Lake District for just £2.

Every year close to 16million people visit the the Cumbrian national park to take in its beautiful peaks and stunning lakes, and to visit the plentiful pubs and cream tea rooms.

With an area of 2,362 km², it can be difficult to properly get stuck into the Lake District on a single holiday, unless you spend a fair amount of time on the road, Lancs Live reported.

If you prefer to let someone else do the work so you can kick back and properly take in the views, then a £2 and you'll get to see the unrivalled views across the shores of Windermere.

The £2 cap on bus fares in England has been extended again until the end of October, the government recently announced, meaning some of the most scenic trips in the country can now be bagged for less than the price of two Greggs vegan sausage rolls.

One of them is the 599, which travels between Kendal, Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. The bus calls at Windermere rail station so linking up the route with the train is fairly easy.

Along the way you'll pass along Windermere, England's largest lake at 10.5 miles long which is regularly serviced by cruise boats that steam off from the bustling town of Bowness.

In the shadow of the nearby peaks visitors to the town can drop in on the World of Beatrix Potter to learn about the Peter Rabbit author, who lived in the area.

Further along the route and still on the banks of the lake is Brockhole, which is home to an activity centre where you can soar through the sky on a treetop adventure, or splash out on the water, try archery, laser clay shooting or just round around the enormous woodland playground.

Next up is Ambleside, which sits at the top of the lake and has become a major tourist destination due to its picturesque buildings. In the summer months you can take a horse drawn carriage from the centre of the town to Waterhead Pier.

From there you can hop on one of the cruise ships, hire motor and rowing boats, or feed the ducks and swans.

Another place that's certainly worth a visit, or at least a long glance from the confines of a bus, is Grasmere, a village nestled at the foot of some spectacular fells which has its own lake.

The bus fare cap applies to more than 130 bus operators outside of London will rise in November to £2.50 for 12 months, before prices are reviewed.

The current limit on fares has now been extended twice after warnings hundreds of services could be cut without it.

Its aim is to ease the cost of living pressures on passengers but also to encourage people to use buses. With the £2 fares in mind, we've chosen a route that you definitely need to try.
