Worst kept secret in 'fútbol' is now official: Kylian Mbappé will leave PSG at the end of season

SEATTLE - One of the longest 'telenovelas' in modern soccer seems to be coming to an end. On May 10, Kylian Mbappé announced via his X (formerly Twitter) account that he will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the current season.

Speculation over his next chapter has been one of the main topics of discussion for fans and journalists alike for more than two years. With his current contract with PSG ending out at the end of the season, Mbappé will be free to negotiate with any team during the Summer.

The French superstar arrived at PSG as a 19-year-old during the 2017-18 season. Since then he won 14 trophies with the club, including six Ligue 1 titles. He will leave the club as the all-time top scorer, having found the back of the net 255 times -and counting-.

After being eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League semifinals this week, Mbappé will have four games left with PSG, including what will be his last game for the club in the Coupe de France final against Lyon on May 25.

Bought from Monaco for €180 million, the only missing piece in Mbappé's successful stint with PSG was the Champions League. In seven seasons with the club, he only managed to reach one final (2020) and lost in the Round of 16 four times.

In terms of personal accolades, Mbappé won multiple individual awards with PSG, including best player in Ligue 1 a record four times. His form has been excellent, scoring 30+ goals in six of of his seven seasons.

Since bursting into international fame in 2016, Mbappé has been one of the best goal scorers in the world. He has finished as the Ligue 1 top scorer five times and, with 26 goals this season, he is set to win it for a sixth time, breaking the league's all-time record.

It's still uncertain where Mbappé will go next. If we paid attention to the last few years, a deal with Real Madrid could finally happen as there's nothing impeding him to negotiate with the Spanish giants. The 2018 World Cup winner is one of the most coveted soccer stars in the sport and securing his signature would be huge not only for Real Madrid but also for LaLiga.

In terms of goals, Mbappé might be enjoying the best season of his career so far. In 46 games played in all competitions, the Frenchman has found the back of the net 43 times, with eight of those coming in the Champions League.

At the international level, Mbappé sits only 11 goals away from becoming France's all-time goal scorer. His 46 goals for 'Les Bleus' rank third only behind Thierry Henry's 51 and Olivier Giroud's 57 goals.
