‘World’s best restaurant’ Noma set to close next year

The 'world's best restaurant' Noma is set to close next year for a reinvention of the business. The restaurant, rated number one globally and with three Michelin stars, will close at the end of 2024.

The innovative Danish restaurant, run by chef René Redzepi, and co-founded by Claus Meyer back in 2003, 'will become a full-time food laboratory', dedicated to the 'work of food innovation' and 'development of new flavours'.

“To continue being Noma, we must change … Winter 2024 will be the last season of Noma as we know it,” the restaurant announced in a statement online.

"We are beginning a new chapter. In 2025, our restaurant is transforming into a giant lab, a pioneering test kitchen dedicated to the work of food innovation and the development of new flavours, one that will share the fruits of our efforts more widely than ever before.”

Redzepi previously said that he realised that operating a restaurant, a labour-intensive and expensive operation, which relies on voluntary work and cheap labour, is no longer sustainable.

The restaurant has repeatedly ranked among the top 10 on the 'World’s 50 Best Restaurants' list by Restaurant magazine, including reaching number two in 2019 and number one for three years running from 2010 to 2012, and also in 2021.

Chef René Redzepi has been hailed for his work in transforming Nordic cuisine. The restaurant is widely known for its focus on foraging, invention and interpretation of New Nordic Cuisine

The site is expected to remain open for the remainder of the year, before the dining room closure and changes to the business are enacted in 2024.
