Woman's body recovered from Irish lake after gardai carry out searches

A body has been recovered in an Irish lake after a search by gardai and rescue services.

Gardai and the Monaghan Civil Defence conducted searches for a missing person in Co Monaghan.

They subsequently recovered a woman's body from Lough Major at Ballybay on Monday around 12pm.

Monaghan Civil Defence said: "Monday the 7th March 2022 Monaghan Civil Defence boat unit was activated by An Garda Síochána to assist in a search of a lake in Ballybay for a missing person.

"Civil Defence boat crew conduct a search of the lake. The search was concluded at 12pm."

Gardai are treating the woman's death as tragic.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí assisted by Monaghan Civil Defence located the body of a missing person. The female body was removed from the Lough Major, Ballybay.

"As this was a tragic death, An Garda Síochána will not be commenting further."
