Netflix is set to launch a new scripted TV comedy series starring Will Ferrell, marking his first scripted television comedy endeavor. The series, titled GOLF, has been greenlit for 10 episodes and is co-created by Ferrell, Ramy Youssef, and Josh Rabinowitz. In GOLF, Ferrell will portray a fictional golf legend, with Youssef also having an onscreen role. Youssef and Rabinowitz, known for their work on Hulu's Ramy, will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions.
The details of Youssef's character in GOLF are being kept under wraps, with sources indicating that the show will not be a two-hander. The show's title, GOLF, is to be capitalized, though it remains unclear if it stands for an acronym. Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue will executive produce for T-Street, while Andy Campagna will executive produce for Cairo Cowboy.
For Ferrell, GOLF represents his most significant scripted acting role to date, following his notable career in comedy, including roles in Elf, Anchorman, Step Brothers, and more. Youssef, on the other hand, has been involved in projects such as the Netflix comedy Mo and the Amazon animated series #1 Happy Family USA. Rabinowitz, known for his work on Babes and Rel, will bring his expertise to the series as well.
Netflix's decision to pick up GOLF aligns with its strategy to expand into 'sports-adjacent' programming. The streaming service recently streamed The Netflix Cup, a live event featuring pro golfers and Formula 1 drivers, and has found success with the docuseries Full Swing.
