When is the final episode of Holby City airing on TV?

After more than two decades on our TV screens, Holby City is coming to an end. The Casualty-spin-off has had a great run, but the BBC axed it in June 2021.

The broadcaster said it had decided to cut the show to “make room for new opportunities” that “better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.”

The show's demise has been written into the storyline, with staff being told they have three months to save the hospital.

That gives the show some breathing space, but there's a time limit. As we prepare to bid goodbye to our favourite doctors, here's everything you need to know about when we can expect the final episode and what it will entail.

When is Holby City ending?

The final episode of Holby City is due to air in March 2022.

The news was officially confirmed by the show on Twitter. The post read: "We’re very sorry to bring you the sad news that Holby City will come to an end in March next year, after 23 amazing years.

"We are so very grateful to all of Holby’s wonderful cast, crew, writers, producers - and to our millions of loyal viewers and fans for being part of our show."

In its statement last year, the BBC thanked all the cast and crew that had worked on the show since 1999.

It continued: "Holby has been a stalwart with audiences, delighting millions of viewers each week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling mix of cutting-edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.

"We look forward to working with the team over the coming months to ensure that when it ends, Holby goes out on a high."

What's in store for the final episodes?

The concluding episodes will follow the hospital as its put into special measures, but this won't stop it going out with the bang.

We can expect the finale to be a spectacle, with some familiar faces returning for the last hurrah.

Holby City star Rosie Marcel, who plays Jac Naylor, recently told Digital Spy: "I can't say a lot without giving too much away, but what I will say is that the finale is going to be amazing. We're bringing back loads of old characters, which is going to be really exciting for everyone."

The final episodes will seal the fate of Jac, who has been a staple character for the last 16 years. It was recently revealed that her brain tumour is now terminal. Killing her off won't be popular with loyal fans of the medical drama, so it could be used for an uplifting ending, but we wouldn't rule her death out.

The finale will tie up all the loose ends, conclude character arcs and hopefully deliver something satisfying.

Episodes of Holby City are aired on Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One. Previous episodes are available on catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
