What is the Eurovision Song Contest?

Eurovision, also known as the Eurovision Song Contest, is an international singing competition held annually in Europe. It has become one of the longest-running and most-watched non-sporting television events in the world. The contest is organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and has been held since 1956.

The Eurovision Song Contest brings together participating countries from Europe, along with a few countries outside of Europe, to compete against each other in a televised music competition. Each participating country selects an original song and artist to represent them in the contest. The songs are performed live on stage, and a panel of professional juries and viewers from each country vote to determine the winner.

The voting process involves each country assigning a set of points, from 1 to 12 (including a top score of 12 points), to their favorite songs. The points are then combined, and the song with the highest total score is declared the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Eurovision has evolved over the years and has become known for its diverse musical styles, elaborate stage performances, and often colorful and extravagant stage designs. The competition has also become a significant cultural event, fostering national pride, showcasing musical talent, and promoting unity and understanding among European nations.

While the contest was originally limited to European countries, it has expanded to include countries outside of Europe. Notable non-European participants include Australia, which has been invited to compete since 2015, and Israel, which is an active participant due to its membership in the European Broadcasting Area.

Eurovision has gained a massive international following, with millions of viewers tuning in to watch the competition each year. It has also launched the careers of many successful artists, such as ABBA and Celine Dion, who gained recognition after winning the contest.
