Westworld season five cancelled by HBO after budget cuts and low ratings

Westworld fans will never get to the bottom of the sci-fi drama after season five has been cancelled by HBO.

The highly-anticipated fifth season was supposed to tie up loose storylines, but it looks like fans will just have to draw their own conclusions.

Season four ended three months ago, with the finale airing on August 14th, leaving fans wanting more action from Rachel Evan Wood, James Marsden and Aaron Paul.

The decision to axe the show was down to the soaring production budget and the decline in ratings, according to Variety.

Westworld was the latest casualty of the "ongoing evaluation of programming" as HBO becomes part of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Season One of the show reportedly had a budget of $88million and season two was a staggering $107million.

The show's creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were said to be planning season five, but the plans were changed.

Westworld, which is based on the 1973 film of the same name, scooped nine Primetime Emmy awards, as well as an impressive 54 nominations.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery have been trying to save as much as $3.5billion following the merger.

Just last month Nolan, the brother of director Christopher Nolan, hinted at a fifth and final series of the show.

"We always planned for a fifth and final season," Nolan said last month.

'We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them," he said.

Lisa, his wife, told Deadline: "Jonah (Nolan) and I have always had an ending in mind that we hope to reach. We have not quite reached it yet."

Despite bringing in Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul to boost ratings, they plummeted for the show's third season, and continued to tumble for the fourth season.

Fans moaned that the show had become confusing and said that they lacked characters to root for.

HBO released a statement: "Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step.
