West Ham's journey to Prague: From London via USA, the Maldives, Australia, Bali and more

West Ham United fans are travelling to Prague in their thousands this week ahead of the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina at the Fortuna Arena.

For West Ham, it is their first major European final in 47 years, with their last coming against Anderlecht in the 1976 European Cup Winners’ Cup in Brussels, a competition which ceased to exist 24 years ago.

While West Ham's supporters were given an allocation of just under 5,000 tickets for the game, over triple the amount of supporters are expected to flock to the Czech capital for the game, with between 15,000 and 20,000 supporters understood to be heading to Prague.

Because of the demand not just for tickets but travel as well, prices have significantly hiked for travel between London and Prague. As a result, many supporters are taking indirect routes between the English and Czech capital in their quests to either attend the match, or just be a part of the party with thousands of others in claret and blue.

I, like thousands of others, are not flying directly, instead getting the Eurostar to Paris before flying from France to Prague, embarking on the same journey back on the way home.

For many others, their routes are far more convoluted and while some are taking unique routes, there are West Ham fans travelling to Prague all corners of the planet.

In a look at the many different routes available, football.london heard stories of people travelling from destinations including the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, the Maldives and more to reach Prague.

Among those is Jake Balding from Essex, who has spent the past four and a half months travelling, but has opted to cut his travels in Asia short in order not to miss West Ham’s first European final in almost half a century.

"I’m travelling from Indonesia," said Balding. "I've been travelling for four and a half months but decided to cut it short a few weeks and go to Prague.

"I’m flying from Bali to Kuala Lumpur, then Dubai before going to Prague, 30 hours of travelling in total. I will be heading home soon after but I’m going to Milan on Friday to watch the Champions League with the Italian fans.

"My brother Cameron is coming from Indonesia to Prague as well. He came out here two and a half weeks ago to visit me and then we decided to go to Prague.

"I would have only be out here for a few more weeks if it wasn’t for West Ham but I can’t think of a better way of ending my travels then going to Prague and hopefully, being there for us winning it."

Morgan Rees, another one of the West Ham faithful, will be travelling with his mum Elizabeth, who heads to Prague as part of a very exclusive club.

Elizabeth was in attendance for the 1976 4-2 defeat to Anderlecht in Brussels, and just like she did 47 years ago, will be in the crowd when West Ham take on the Viola.

Joining them two of them on the trip is Elizabeth’s 'Lyall style' banner, the same one in Brussels that she took for when John Lyall was in charge of West Ham in their last European final. Better still, that flag was initially her granddad's from a navy ship.

"Not so much an unusual story - but my Mum went to the last European final in 1976 and is going to this one too," said Rees. "I can't imagine many went to both!"

While for some, it is a long journey via uncommon methods, or even continuing support across Europe that began five days ago, others have had to make serious adjustments to previous plans in order to attend the game.

That is the case for Thomas Smalley and his partner Helen Pratt. For his partner’s Christmas present, Smalley bought Pratt tickets to see her favourite band Pulp in Dublin on Friday, June 9, just two days after the final.

The scramble to attend both, not helped by the difficulties in getting to Prague directly, has made it quite the week for the couple, as Smalley explains.

West Ham United fans Helen Pratt (middle) and Thomas Smalley (right) (Thomas Smalley)

"So Monday, work until 3ish, get the train to Gatwick," Smalley explains. "Fly to Vienna, night in Vienna, few hours there in the morning then train to Prague Tuesday afternoon.

"Now getting home. For Christmas, I got the Mrs a romantic weekend in Dublin to see her favourite ever band, Pulp. The gig is Friday. So we have to be in Dublin for Friday morning. So Thursday, is a five-hour train to somewhere in Germany to fly to Dublin to land at 1am Friday morning. Get to the hotel with her. Get up Friday, see Pulp, have a touristy day Saturday because I’ve ruined the Thursday. Then, home to London on Sunday.

"Pulp will either be the greatest gig of my life if we win. Or the biggest session of drowning my sorrows in history."

Similarly to Smalley, Dan Plummer found himself organising trying to get to and from Prague in the midst of a holiday with his family to Orlando - though the rest of his family don't sound too impressed...

"I'm currently in Orlando at Disney with the family on a two-week holiday,” said Plummer. "I’ve done every away game so far so can’t miss the final!

"So I have had to leave the family in Florida next Tuesday afternoon and fly to New York and then direct from New York to Prague, landing in Prague Wednesday at 10am!

"She went mental so I have had to extend the holiday for four days and fly back to Orlando (via Frankfurt) Thursday at 7.30am from Prague in order to get back to Florida for dinner with Mickey Mouse Thursday night! Whole thing has cost me a small mortgage."

Those are just some of many stories of people opening up their commitments to getting to Prague, despite more than two thirds of those heading to Prague doing so only to watch the match in the designated fan zone in the city of Prague.
