We made ice cream cones from every supermarket and couldn't believe how cheap they were

The warm weather is here and with that comes a surge in demand for ice cream.

But while sales are now soaring for summer, we all know that food prices have soared too, with ice cream falling victim to hikes more than most products.

Even when prices have stayed the same, shoppers are finding they are getting less for their money.

Where a box of four Magnums used to be around £3 for instance, you'll now typically get a box of three for the same price.

We bought a tub of vanilla ice cream from every supermarket (Manchester Family/MEN)

But there are cheaper ways to enjoy a cool snack - mainly by making your own.

To find out exactly how cheaply you can make an ice cream, we hit every supermarket to get a two-litre tub of vanilla ice cream and a packet of cones.

Now, the normal wafer cones are the cheapest, but given the fact they were mostly sold out, we opted for waffle cones for our comparison, which I'd argue are much tastier anyway.

We got the cheapest vanilla available from each of the stores - Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and M&S - along with a pack of 10 cones from each one.

The cones are pretty similar, the main difference being that Aldi and Lidl's are a bit taller and thinner and don't taste quite as nice as the others.

But when you look at what it costs to make a cone from both of those, 15p and 16p respectively, there's little cause for complaint.

I doubt very much anyone would turn one down on a hot day.

We worked out the price using the cost of one cone from each place, along with 60g of ice cream, which is around two scoops - and more than enough to fill the cone.

Even the most expensive, from Sainsbury's, worked out at just 23p per ice cream.

Taste wise, the ice cream doesn't differ that much either. Admittedly the more expensive ones from M&S and Sainsbury's are a bit creamier, and if I had to pick the best, it would be those two I'd go for.

Compared with what you pay for a box of ice creams, none of them break the bank. In today's financial climate, at least it's one less thing to sweat about.
