Virginia State – Norfolk State delivered a wacky finish in the final 6 seconds

If you’re looking for the strangest finish to a college football game so far this week, may we introduce you to Virginia State-Norfolk State?

In the last six seconds of this Saturday football game, logic leaped into the twilight zone and chaos reigned as both teams tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Only one team would take a golden opportunity to salt the game and completely blow it at the last possible second, however.

Let’s set the stage. Backed up near the goal line of their own end zone with six seconds to go and up 27-24, Virginia State inexplicably didn’t try to just punt the ball away on fourth down and attempted to run what looked to be a trick play with what broadcasters said was their reserve quarterback in Jordan Davis to get the game-ending first down.

Well, that play completely backfired and not enough yardage was gained, but it looked like time had expired on the clock.

Even with the clock at zero, the team could’ve hypothetically just taken the safety if the play was a dud, giving Norfolk State two garbage points and basically draining the clock of all its usefulness. But, alas, it looked like Virginia State had gotten saved by the bell despite the on-field snafu.

Well, as Lee Corso would say, not so fast, my friend.

The officials gave Norfolk State literally one second left on the turnover on downs, which of course meant that the team could just miraculously send out the field goal team for a chip shot that would’ve tied the contest at 27 all as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

As Norfolk State triumphantly sent the field goal team out to tie the game… the team somehow fumbled the snap, and a Virginia State player recovered the ball and ran it back for a touchdown and really closed things out, 33-24.

W… what?

Yeah, we don’t know either. College football!

CFB fans barely knew what to say.
