Victoria take down Redbacks to shoot to top spot

Jake Fraser-McGurk was sent packing early as Victoria rocketed to top spot on the domestic one-day cup table with a three-wicket win over South Australia at Junction Oval.

Chasing 232 for victory on Thursday, the Vics reached the target with 35 balls to spare courtesy of solid knocks from Tom Rogers (67), Nic Maddinson (54) and Marcus Harris (43).

The win catapulted Victoria from third to first on the table ahead of the final round of the season.

The Bushrangers take on second-placed NSW in their final match.

If Victoria win, they will host the final against either the Blues or defending champions Western Australia.

South Australia remain last with five losses and a no result from their six matches.

Adding to their woes was a suspected broken nose to opener Henry Hunt, who was struck flush in the face after dropping a catch while fielding at mid-off.

Victoria were cruising at 2-177, but their bid to snare the bonus point by winning within 40 overs resulted in a collapse of 5-41.

Jonathan Merlo (14 not out) and Sam Elliott (8no) helped get Victoria over the line.

"It's a little bit disappointing (to miss out on the bonus point)," Rogers said.

"We felt like it was pretty important, we gave it a crack but it wasn't to be."

The Redbacks reached 9-231 after being sent in to bat.

Peter Siddle (2-56) snared the first wicket of the day when Hunt edged through to the keeper with an attempted hook.

Five balls later, X-factor Fraser-McGurk departed for six after dancing down the wicket and striking the impressive Fergus O'Neill (3-38) straight to cover.

It came just two days after Fraser-McGurk cracked 41 off 18 balls for Australia against West Indies.

The Redbacks slumped to 7-132, before Harry Nielsen (61 off 86 balls) and Harry Conway (43no off 67 balls) lifted the visitors to a defendable total.

"We scrapped and fought our way to 230-odd. We knew we were under," Redbacks coach Jason Gillespie said.

"But on another day, if we show that positive intent, we're scoring well in excess of 300. I don't want us to lose that intent."
