Vicky McClure’s new children’s book based on her caravan holidays to Skegness as a child

Nottingham actress Vicky McClure appeared on ITV’s Lorraine to discuss her brand new children’s book Castle Rock Mystery Crew. The Line of Duty star has released her first ever children’s book which is inspired by her caravan holidays as a child growing up.

Appearing on the ITV breakfast show, Lorraine praised the actress for teaching children about dementia in the book and said 'it's a great idea'.

Vicky said: “When you’re approached to do a kids' book and you're not an author, and obviously Kim Curran, who wrote it with me, it was just an opportunity for me to reach out to kids.”

Lorraine added: “This is very much based on your experiences and your experiences on holiday.”

“For me, caravan holidays are all about freedom and simplicity,” said Vicky.

“I think the pressure and the extortionate prices of holidays now, you don’t want to get out of the six weeks holidays and all your mates are off to Disneyland and all this extreme. I just think, you know what? There’s a lot to be said about going to a caravan park wherever it may be, Skeggy was my place.

“We were in Mablethorpe and I just have the fondest memories of making new friends and going to the arcades and the clubhouse at night, a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps.”

Lorraine added that she also had a similar childhood experience growing up. She said: “It was great, it was exciting, this is the thing about all the adventures that these characters have.”

“Is this going to be one of many do you think Vicky?”

Vicky replied: “Who knows, let's see if people enjoy it. I love friendship, in so much as not everybody has that standard family and friends are as important as family and that's what this book is about. They’ve all got different family set ups and I want kids to be able to feel that they can relate to it.”

“I’m not a strong reader Lorraine, I’m still not. Even reading out loud I still find it quite daunting, so the font in there is the biggest font you could put in and there’s lots of pictures. I don’t want the pressure of picking up a book and trying to get to the end can sometimes be quite daunting.”

The pair continued to speak about the new book, aimed at ages 9-12, and Lorraine praised Line of Duty star Vicky for the use of a character with ADHD and the way she describes dementia with ‘great fondness’.

Vicky said: “It’s with subtlety and reality. Also the Line-Of Duty side of my life now is great and it’s got that element of mystery in it and adventure. The kids can go on and try to solve the crime, there’s a real great plot that runs throughout it, but also it is just about having a nice time.”

Lorraine then added: “Having a nice time is very very underrated.”

The pair then discussed Soccer Aid 2023, with Vicky coaching the England squad for the match.
