During a speech at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the United States' plan to utilize seized Russian assets to support the reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. Blinken emphasized that the US Congress has granted the authority to seize Russian assets within the country and that this power will be exercised.
Blinken stated, 'What Putin destroyed, Russia should and must pay to rebuild,' underscoring the accountability he believes Russia should bear for the damages caused. He also mentioned that the US is collaborating with other G7 nations to similarly target 'Russia's immobilized sovereign assets' for the same purpose.
Highlighting the potential impact of these actions, Blinken expressed that the G7's coordinated efforts could release significant funds, sending a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that his position is weakening.
Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Blinken reiterated the US government's unwavering support for Ukraine's recovery. A State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, confirmed this commitment, emphasizing the importance of assisting Ukraine in its reconstruction efforts.
