US Defense Secretary Austin Vows To Support Ukraine Against Russia

U.S. Defense Secretary Austin meets with British Defense Minister Shapps at the in Washington

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated the United States' unwavering support for Ukraine during the 20th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany. Austin emphasized that the US stands firmly with Ukraine and will not allow it to fail, despite ongoing delays in critical funding from Congress.

Austin highlighted Ukraine's military efforts in degrading the capabilities of the Kremlin, stating that Ukraine remains steadfast in the face of adversity. He underscored the collective commitment of the United States and its allies to stand by Ukraine and prevent its failure, emphasizing that the free world stands united in support of Ukraine.

The trip marked Austin's first official visit abroad since undergoing a prostate cancer procedure in December. Despite health challenges, Austin has remained actively engaged in addressing the urgent situation in Ukraine, participating in virtual meetings and now in-person discussions.

Concerns have been raised about Ukraine's dwindling ammunition supplies, with reports indicating that Ukraine is significantly outgunned on the battlefield. The US and its allies have expressed alarm over the critical situation and the urgent need for additional support to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.

While Russia has been reported to have a substantial advantage in artillery munitions production, Austin highlighted significant losses suffered by Russia in the conflict. He noted that Russian troops have faced significant casualties, and Russia has incurred substantial financial costs in its aggressive campaign against Ukraine.

The future of supplemental aid for Ukraine in Congress remains uncertain, with ongoing discussions among lawmakers about finding a path forward. Despite challenges, efforts are being made to secure additional support for Ukraine, with the Pentagon recently announcing a $300 million aid package to address immediate needs.

However, officials have cautioned that the $300 million aid package is insufficient to meet Ukraine's long-term requirements. President Joe Biden and national security adviser Jake Sullivan have both emphasized the urgency of providing adequate support to Ukraine to ensure its survival and security.

Austin reiterated the critical importance of standing together to resist Russian aggression and support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty. The international community remains committed to assisting Ukraine in building a strong and resilient defense force to confront ongoing challenges.

As discussions continue in Congress and among allied nations, the focus remains on finding sustainable solutions to support Ukraine and uphold its security in the face of escalating tensions.
